ZINWISE

Technology

In mineral sunscreen, dispersion is the whole game.

Two formulators can use identical zinc oxide and produce sunscreens that behave nothing alike. The difference is not the powder. It is how the powder was wetted, milled, and kept apart once it entered the emulsion.

Why zinc oxide is difficult

Zinc oxide protects across both UVA and UVB by absorbing and scattering ultraviolet radiation. It is photostable, it does not penetrate healthy skin in meaningful quantity, and it is the filter most acceptable to regulators across markets. Those advantages come with a physical problem: particles small enough to be transparent are also small enough to agglomerate.

Agglomerated particles scatter visible light, which is what a white cast actually is. They also reduce the effective surface area available to absorb UV, so measured protection falls below what the formulation was designed for. The product can pass on paper and fail on skin.

Where the upstream process changes the answer

Dispersion can only work as well as the material allows. A particle that arrives already tightly agglomerated will not separate cleanly in a bead mill, no matter how much energy is applied. A particle with a narrow size distribution and low initial agglomeration disperses faster, at lower shear, with less surfactant — which leaves more formulation room for everything else.

This is why the material technology matters to us commercially rather than just technically. Our upstream partner produces nanomaterial through a patented continuous process under controlled conditions, rather than by grinding down larger material. The particle is built, not broken.

What we control downstream

Incoming material specification, dispersion procedure, mill residence time, temperature control during milling, and the point of addition into the emulsion. Each of these is specified in the process document and measured in-process, not assumed.

We verify dispersion by particle size distribution after milling and by visual film assessment on drawdown. If a batch disperses outside specification, it does not become product.

Specific test methods, instrument models and acceptance criteria form part of the technical documentation shared under NDA with brand partners.
